June 12 Anniversary Generates Divergent Opinions In Jos

The occasion of this year’s June 12 anniversary is eliciting divergent opinions in the city of Jos.
On this day, late business mogul, MKO Abiola was believed to have won the 1993 presidential election. However, his victory was annulled by the then Military Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida rtd.
The day is celebrated in honour of the Yoruba Leader who later died in mysterious circumstance while in incarceration. A cross section of residents who spoke with JAY FM in Jos ,though divided in their opinions ,says the significance of June 12 anniversary is not lost on them.
Toye Ogunsuyi is the Acting President General of the Yoruba community living in the 19 northern states and Abuja while Damian Chukwu is a political historian . Both agreed that June 12 anniversary is alive and should be regarded as an event that marked the birth of the current democracy in Nigeria.
